Food Allergies

Keeping Our Children Safe

Please keep in mind that we have MANY children with nut and other food allergies.  While Saint Pius X is not a peanut/tree nut-free school we should all be aware that our decision to send our children to school with nut products greatly increases the possibility of harming another child.  Some classrooms are peanut/tree nut-free; please check with your child’s teacher before sending in nut products.

Parents are asked to avoid sending any food containing peanuts, tree nuts, and nut oils to school and school-sponsored activities. This includes food for lunches, snacks, field trips, celebrations, class projects, and birthday parties. If your child eats a nut product for breakfast (i.e. peanut butter on toast), please make sure his or her hands are cleaned either by using wet wipes or washing with soap and water before arriving to school.

Please encourage your children to wash their hands before touching ANYTHING in the school after handling nut products.  Sending your child to school with wet wipes to use BEFORE they walk to the bathroom to wash their hands could help avoid a contact reaction.  Discuss the possibility of offering your child nut products at home before and after school instead of sending them to school, this could greatly decrease the health risk imposed on others.

Nut-free snack list

In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables, the following website provides a regularly updated list of nut-fee snack foods that is 9 pages long:

Facts about food allergies:

  • Children's food allergies are on the rise with 1 in 13 children having food allergies today
  • 25% of children have their first reaction at school.
  • Peanut and tree-nut allergies tend to have the most severe reactions. These reactions can be life threatening and require medical intervention or hospitalization.
  • Allergies can develop over time, so a child who previously was not allergic to nuts could have an allergic reaction at school.
